George Abel

This is George Abel, the older brother of Hockey Hall of Famer Sid Abel.

George Abel rarely left his hometown of Melville, Saskatchewan. He starred for and lather coached the Melville Millionaires for many years. He and brothers Don and Lawrence operated a hauling company for man years in Melville, but in these parts George was arguably more famous than far away Sid as a hockey hero.

The only time George ever really left Melville was in 1952. He was added to the Edmonton Mercurys Olympic roster that won gold in Oslo, Norway. George scored 6 goals and 12 points in 8 games.

Abel had to quit playing hockey after a nasty head injury in 1954.
